Call Me Facetious

Call me facetious, but it wasn’t that long ago that the BP oil spill was making all the headlines and everyone was concerned about the spill and its effects, and BP was wondering why its stock prices were going down, but now… you hear nary a whisper about the oil spill in the news. What’s all the rage now? The Chilean miners, of course. All the world’s eyes were on the miners, until the last one of them got out, and now.. it seems that news stream has dried up, too.

What about the lives of those people who were affected? Will the miners ever be able to go back to life as they knew it? Would they want to? Would they be able to, if they wanted to? And for those whose livelihoods have been impacted by the oil spill – who’s taking care of them now? Or is it back to business as usual?

We feed on the news media, and dwell on the topic du jour and wax poetic for justice to be done, and I do applaud being socially aware, but who will be there for the affected when the media spotlight moves on to the next big thing?
